Sun, Sand, and Supplies: What to Bring for a Family Day at the Beach
Family Beach Fun Starts With the Right Supplies

A little preparation can go a long way to ensuring the whole family has a good time at the beach. Find out what’s essential and what’s nice to have for a fun day spent in the sand and water.

There is no better way to take advantage of summer weather than by spending a day at the beach with your family. Whether you’re headed to the coast or one of Canada’s many beautiful lakes, you can help ensure an enjoyable experience by bringing everything you need for a smooth outing. Between the sun, sand, water, and hungry kids, a well-stocked beach bag is the key to success.

Sun Protection Essentials

While one of the main goals of going to the beach is to get some sun, too much exposure can end up ruining the day. Sunscreen should be at the top of your list, and don’t forget hats and sunglasses for additional protection, especially if you are heading out during the hottest hours of the day. Lightweight cover-ups or rash guards are also a good idea for kids who like to spend a long time in the water.

A Comfortable Setup

Even if you are planning to spend a lot of time in the water, you want to make your spot in the sand comfortable. Large beach towels or blankets offer a clean place to sit and relax between swimming and running around, and a beach umbrella can make a big difference under the hot sun as well. Families with young kids might also find it handy to use pop-up shade tents for a cool place to rest.

Toys and Swim Gear

Beach toys are key to keeping kids entertained. Buckets, shovels, sand moulds, and beach balls are simple and effective choices that can do the trick for hours. For families planning to swim, ensure the beach bag includes goggles, floaties, and life jackets for those who need them. Water shoes can also be useful on rocky beaches to help protect little feet while swimming or exploring.

Snacks and Drinks

Snacks are a must-have for days at the beach. Easy-to-pack options like fruit, sandwiches, crackers, granola bars, yogurt tubes, and string cheese all travel well and require little preparation. Staying hydrated is also extremely important when having fun in the sun, so make sure you bring plenty of water for everyone.

Helpful Extras

If your beach bag or wagon is filled with the items above, then you pretty much have your essentials covered. But there are some nice-to-have extras as well, especially if you have the space. Extra clothing and extra towels, for example, are always worth packing. Wet towels, sandy shorts, and all manner of spills are almost guaranteed, especially with younger children. Some cleaning wipes will be handy to have at your disposal as well.

Lip balm with SPF, bug spray, and anti-itch cream are also smart additions to a beach bag that you might miss in the event you need them but don’t have them. You might also appreciate waterproof phone pouches to protect electronics from sand and splashes, and a portable charger if you plan to stay for several hours.

Bringing everything you need to the beach will ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves to the fullest. Whether your plans involve swimming or sandcastles, being prepared will help you make the most of a beautiful day.
